Lalo Aira Secondary School Revitalization and Transformation Task Force
Steemed Lalo Aira Secondary School Alumni, Friends, and Partners, we cordially invite you to participate in a timely and divinely inspired initiative to revitalize and restore the Lalo Aira Secondary School, established in 1969, to a legacy of educational excellence and service to our young people.
Background:
LASS Alumine – Minnesota Chapter, USA, has taken the initiative to help assess the critical deteriorating situation of the Lalo Aira Secondary School and envision ways to assist the school and our community in restoring it to its legacy of excellence in a sustainable manner, following the awareness of the critical deteriorating situation.
Preliminary Action taken:
To address the critical need of the school, we followed Nahemei’s strategy, namely, Strategic planning. We decided to focus on assessing the situation honestly, developing a plan, gathering resources, and delegating tasks effectively.
For this purpose, we, LASS Alumine – Minnesota, USA, contracted Dr. Wakgari Duresss, a consultant and professor researcher in Addis Ababa, to critically assess the situation of the school in coordination with the school administration and Biridilla Synod.
Per our agreement, Dr. Wakkari thoroughly assessed the situation of the school, identified several critical areas that need immediate attention, and also outlined several actionable recommendations aimed at addressing the identified challenges.
Some of the major critical areas needing attention that were identified in his assessment were:
• Infrastructure: LASS suffers from poor facilities and limited resources, which hinder effective teaching and learning.
• Staff Development: There are significant gaps in professional development opportunities for teachers and school leaders, contributing to low morale and high turnover rates.
• Community Engagement: Weak community and parental involvement in school governance and support mechanisms further exacerbate the challenges faced by LASS.
Resolution and Vision to Restore and Revitalize:
The report outlines several actionable recommendations aimed at addressing the identified challenges:
• Invest in Professional Development: Continuous, practical training for teachers and leaders is crucial for enhancing educational quality.
• Upgrade Infrastructure: Immediate attention to physical facilities, including classrooms and sanitation, is necessary to create a conducive learning environment.
• Strengthening Community Engagement: Fostering partnerships with parents and local stakeholders can enhance accountability and resource mobilization.
With this, a resource mobilization method and mechanism are drafted with the task force, school administration, and the leadership of the Birbir Dilla Synod.
We, LASS Alumine – Minnesota Chapter, USA, believe that a well-balanced approach should aim not only to address the school's current issues but also to transform it into a sustainable system. This involves developing actionable strategies for continuous improvement, drawing on both local and international best practices, to foster a positive educational environment, empowered staff, and leadership that envisions excellence and self-sufficiency.
However, the execution of this vision and aspiration is contingent upon the active involvement of all stakeholders, including the Alumni, local community, Churches, and partners, with a high standard of accountability and responsibility.
LASS Alumina has been making substantial contributions to the education and empowerment of our youth for many decades, and we are committed to maintaining this legacy while also enhancing it to an even higher standard. This time, we are collaborating with all individuals, the local community, and organizations who are concerned about the future of our young people and the excellence in education that is informed by our Christian faith.
Therefore, if you are deeply concerned about the fate of our young people, the heritage of LASS, and our broader community, we urge you to take this initiative seriously and participate in the conversation and resource mobilization initiative now steered by local community leaders, whose name is listed below.
